Earlier today, I saw Once at Royal Alexandra Theatre. The Tony winning musical is currently on a national tour. It opened in Toronto on November 26 and runs till January 5. You can also still see the production on Broadway. I could have seen the production while I was in New York in October but I knew it was making it’s national tour stop here in Toronto. So, I decided to check it out here instead.

I still wish I got to see the production on Broadway with Steve Kazee, Cristin Milioti and the rest of the ensemble cast when they were doing their run. That was how I feel in love with the musical. I still haven’t watched the movie but I love the songs and I knew of the storyline but not in great detail. I totally forgot how it would end. I love how there was a pre show reception on the stage where people can get drinks on stage before the show began. The actors on stage would play songs as well to get us all in the mood. It felt like we were with them in Dublin. I also liked the use of lighting during the production especially at the beginning when the house lights would finally turn off and Girl enters. They are all very talented people as they not only need to act and sing but have to play instruments too. Stuart Ward and Dani de Waal were great to watch as Guy and Girl. You could feel the chemistry between the two and the struggles both characters have throughout the show. Although I have to admit, it did take me a while to get use to Dani as Girl because for me, Cristin is Girl. Erica Swindell played Reza in the performance I saw and she is amazing with the violin. She was also previously in the Broadway production. My favorite song is still Falling Slowly. Steve and Cristin’s version is below:
